Job Summary:This member of our feedlot team will understand and follow protocols for removing sick or injured animals, as well as the pharmacological protocol for treatment. Members within this area will also have horsemanship skills required to remove sick/injured animals in a humane safe fashion. Pencheckers will also be required to process incoming animals and help ship those animals at finished weights.
Major Responsibilities:Check cattle pens for ill cattle, using a horse All animals removed from pens will be treated with appropriate pharmacological protocols according to the CVRF Veterinarian New incoming animals must be processed – tagged, vaccinated, implanted Finished animals must be sorted and loaded on trucks for shipping to final destination Cleaning of barn and office area.
Minor Responsibilities:Persons within this position will also be required to mend fences within the feedlot. When required, these individuals will also be required to operate front-end loaders to place straw in pens. To maintain animal health within pens, water bowels must be cleaned on a regular basis.
Qualifications & Skills: · Individual within this job must have strong livestock husbandry skills. · Possesses knowledge of, and ability to recognize common illness types and patterns within cattle in feedlot setting. · Capable of understanding pharmacological protocols. · Good horsemanship skills · These individuals must have good human relations skills and be a team player. · Must be able to learn on-site.
Experience Persons within this position should have previous work experience in the livestock industry, and feedlot experience is preferred. Heavy equipment training will also be an asset. Person entering this field must work in all weather conditions, and be punctual.
Training Majority of training will occur within individual feedlots, either with foreman or other qualified staff. Individuals will also be provided with training courses from time to time as determined by management. Employer to provide OH&S Standard First Aid Training to selected individuals.
Personal Characteristics Good interpersonal skills are essential for working in a feedlot setting. Reliable, responsible, self-motivated learners who have compassion for animals are desired.
Physical requirements Tasks involved require a fit individual in good health.
Salary Range: Dependent on experience and training
Work Hours: 7 AM – 5 PM Monday to Sunday, On a rotation basis for days of work.
Overtime: None PROBATIONARY PERIOD: 3 Months
Other Benefits: Medical, Dental and Disability benefits begin after 3 months of employment.
Work Environment: Primarily outdoor-based tending to livestock. May require occasional heavy equipment work.
Safety Responsibilities: OH&S Standard First Aid required
Hazards: Working with cattle, horses and heavy farm machinery relating to feedlot functions. |
